아픈 사람의 돈 Money from Sick People

어두운 세상을 비추는 빛과 같은 사람들이 있다. 이제는 넷플릭스에서도 볼 수 있는 다큐 영화 ‘어른 김장하’의 주인공이 바로 그런 사람이다. 그는 진주에서 한약방을 하면서 번 돈을 필요한 곳에 아낌없이 나누어 줬다. 자기처럼 돈이 없어 배우지 못한 사람들에게 교육받을 기회를 주려고 학교를 세우고1000명이 넘는 가난한 학생들을 대학까지 아낌없이 지원해 줬고, 결국에는 재산을 털어 세운 그 학교를 국가에 기증했다. 그는 문화 및 인권 단체에 아낌없이 돈을 주면서도 이름을 내세우지 않았다.

그는 왜 그러한 삶을 살았을까. 그의 말에 답이 있다. “내가 돈을 벌었다면 결국 아프고 괴로운 사람들을 상대로 돈을 벌었다.” 그의 말대로 “다른 직업을 택했더라면 그 돈으로 호의호식할 수 있었고 호화 방탕한 생활을 할 수 있었을 것이다.” 그러나 그는 아픈 사람들의 호주머니에서 나온 돈을 허투루 쓸 수 없어 그것을 모아 사회에 환원했다. 요즘 세상에 어떤 의료인이 아픈 사람들을 상대로 돈을 벌었다고 그 돈을 사회에 돌려주겠다고 생각할까. 돈이 전부인 세상이 되었다고 해도 과장이 아닐 만큼 모든 것이 돈에 좌우되는 게 현실이다. 그런데 다큐를 보면 그런 사람이 세상에는 있다. “똥은 쌓아두면 구린내가 나지만 흩어버리면 거름이 되어 꽃도 피우고 열매도 맺는다. 돈도 이와 같아서 주변에 나누어야 사회에 꽃이 핀다”고 생각하며 이타적인 삶을 실천한 사람이 있다.

그러면서도 그는 자신에 대한 우상화를 한사코 거부한다. 자기 자랑도 하지 않고 모임에 가면 한쪽 구석에 앉는다. 사진 속의 그는 늘 중심에서 비켜난 곳에 앉아 있다. 겸손함이 몸에 배어 있어서다. 그가 주역의 64괘 중 겸손할 겸(謙)자 겸괘를 가장 좋아하는 것은 당연하지 싶다. 돈이 사람을 오만방자하게 만드는 세상에서 그는 돈으로 인해 더욱 겸손해졌다. 그가 가진 돈이 아프고 괴로운 사람들을 상대로 번 것이라는 윤리의식이 그를 겸손하게 만들었다.

There is a person who shines in the darkness like the light. The protagonist in the documentary film ‘Adult Jangha Kim’ on Netflix is that person. He ran an oriental medical clinic in Jinjoo and generously gave his money to people in need. He established the school to give an educational opportunity to people who didn’t have money to study and supported university tuition for over 1,000 impoverished students. Moreover, he donated the school that he built with all his money to the government. He also donated a lot of money to culture and human rights organizations, but he didn’t mention his name.

Why did he do that? The answer is right in his quote. “I could make money from the people who were sick and suffered from diseases. If I chose a different job, I could live a lavish life and enjoy an extravagant life.” He couldn’t squander his money that came from sick people, so he saved that money and return it to society. What kind of doctors can think of returning their money to society because they make money from sick people? Unfortunately, the world is under the control of money as if money is everything. Nevertheless, the person who is in the documentary still exists in this world. The person who lives an altruistic life still exists. He said, “Poop that is just piled up gives off bad smell, but when it is spread on soil, it can be a good fertilizer and make flower bloom and bear fruit. Money is the same. When we share it with people around us, we can make flower boom in our society.”

He did good deeds but refused to be idolized. He didn’t show off himself, and when he attended gatherings, he usually sat in one corner. He always sat out of the middle in every picture. It’s because humility is taken for granted to him. That’s why he like Chinese word ‘Gyeom’, which translates to ‘humility’ in the book I Ching, also known as Book of Changes the most. He became more humble in a world where money makes people arrogant. A sense of ethics that his money came from sick and painful people made him modest.
