A beautiful marble which is called life is in front of me.

What will I carve on this marble? Will I carve Venus, a glamorous god of beauty; Apollo, a masculine god of beauty; gracious Buddha, or sacred Jesus?

What I carve is up to me. One creates a masterpiece that impresses all people, another leaves disgraceful rubbish, and the other just produces something normal.

Life can be compared to Art. Life is a creative self-expression. Living a life is the process of expressing, demonstrating and completing our dream, personality, talent, and ability. Life is art, and living a life is a piece of our own. We have to be an authentic artist of life by carving our lives hard every day.

God gave me one precious life, a long 60-to-70-years, enough health, various talents, heated passion, and strong will. I should make my own beautiful piece using these materials.

It’s shameful to not be able to make a masterpiece. It’s disgraceful to make rubbish that ends up with nothing. It’s an insult, waste, humiliation, sloth, and failure of life.

Among truth, good, and beauty, what we are most intoxicated by is beauty. There is excitement, blissfulness, delight, impression, and pleasure in beauty. So John Keats, a poet, said that a thing of beauty is a joy forever, and Arthur Schopenhauer, a philosopher, said that there is a redemption and nirvana in beauty.

In Summer 1962, when I stood in front of the white marble sculpture of Michelangelo’s masterpiece, ‘David’ at the Museum of Art in Florence, the birthplace of Renaissance, I stared at it blankly, rapt in thought for a long time.

There is a great quote: Look at David if you want to feel youth.

Young David is angrily staring at giant Goliath, the enemy of his tribe, holding a stone on his right hand and a rock sack on his left hand. He is standing confidently, completely naked and wearing nothing. He has brilliant muscles, full of energetic youth, the will of victory, and a grim face filled with belief. This work is the great masterpiece of genius Michelangelo who had made it for 4 years with painstaking efforts at the age of 29.

I was speechless and couldn’t find any words of admiration in front of this masterpiece. The peak of admiration is silence. It is the great talent of the genius and the great work of the maestro. This work is representative of art of the lively and energetic power. The sense of duty as an artist is amazing and brilliant to find, express, and create beauty. We have to live a passionate life by the enthusiasm of an artist. We have to describe our life beautifully by the affluent expression of an artist. We have to carve our life worthily by the colorful creativity of an artist. I want to emphasize the two principles of how to make life a masterpiece.

The first is the principle of personality. The life of art lies in its personality. Art that doesn’t have personality is not considered Art. Emerson claimed that imitation is suicide. Living my life is to show my personality. The meaning of my existence lies in personality. Living my life is to extremely show my light, scent, voice, soul, life, virtue, power, and existence. Existing is expressing. The greatest person can express themselves the most. We have to express ourselves passionately, sincerely, strongly, vividly, and beautifully.

The second is the principle of passion. We have to live our lives passionately. We have to try to love really hard and do our best. Goodness is to live a life passionately. Living a life without any reason or purpose is considered evil.

We have to live our life as if we’re throwing a ball with all our might. We have to completely burn our life to the work we are doing. We have to concentrate on and develop our work. Only a person who lives a life with that kind of spirit and enthusiasm can build a monument to victory and glory.

Make your life beautiful like art.

Carve your life with all your heart.

Give all your attention to your everyday life to make your life a great masterpiece.

That is the force to create a bright life.

인생이라는 아름다운 대리석이 내 앞에 놓여 있다.

이 대리석에 나는 무엇을 조각할 것인가. 우아한 미의 여신 비너스를 조각할 것인가. 늠름한 남성미의 아폴로를 조각할 것인가. 자비로운 관세음보살을 조각할 것인가. 그리스도의 경건한 상을 조각할 것인가.

그것은 나 자신에게 달려 있다. 어떤 이는 만인이 감탄하는 명작을 만들고, 어떤 이는 수치스러운 졸작을 남기고, 어떤 이는 수수한 평범작을 제작한다.

인생은 예술에 비유된다. 인생은 창조적 자기 표현이다. 산다는 것은 자기의 꿈과 개성과 천분과 재능을 표현하고 발휘하고 완성하는 것이다. 인생은 예술이요, 생애는 작품이다. 우리는 날마다 자기 인생을 열심히 조각하면서 살아가는 진지한 생명의 예술가가 되어야 한다.

신은 나에게 하나밖에 없는 고귀한 생명과 60, 70년의 긴 시간과 충분한 건강과 여러 가지의 재능과 불타는 정열과 강한 의욕을 주었다. 이것을 가지고 나는 아름다운 작품을 만들어야 한다.

훌륭한 역작을 만들지 못한다는 것은 부끄러운 일이다. 죽도 밥도 아닌 태작을 만든다는 것은 수치스러운 일이다. 그것은 생명의 모독이요, 낭비요, 치욕이요, 나태요, 실패작이다.

진선미성의 가치 목록 중에서 우리를 가장 도취케 하는 것은 미다. 미 속에는 흥분이 있고 황홀이 있고 환희가 있고 감격이 있고 쾌감이 있다. 그래서 시인 키츠는 ‘미는 영원한 기쁨’이라고 하였고, 철학자 쇼펜하워는 미 속에 구원과 해탈이 있다고 하였다.

1962년 여름, 나는 르네상스의 발상지인 플로렌스의 미술관에서 창조의 거장 미켈란젤로의 명작 <다윗>의 하얀 대리석 조각 앞에 섰을 때 한참 동안 넋을 잃고 바라보았다.

‘젊음을 느끼려거든 다윗을 보라’는 명언이 있다.

오른손에 돌을 쥐고 왼손에 망태를 메고, 자기 족속의 원수인 거인 골리앗을 분노의 눈동자로 노려보는 젊은 청년 다윗, 몸에 실오라기 하나 걸치지 않고 완전 나체로 당당하게 서 있는 늠름한 다윗, 그 융륭한 근육, 생동감이 넘치는 젊음, 균형 잡힌 몸매, 필승의 의지와 신념으로 가득 찬 엄숙한 표정, 이 작품은 조각의 천재 미켈란젤로가 4년 동안 조심누골의 정혼을 기울여 만든 29세 때의 걸작이다.

나는 이 명작 앞에서 유구무언, 찬탄의 말을 찾지 못했다. 감격의 극치는 침묵이다. 그것은 천재의 신기요, 거장의 명품이다. 이 작품은 생명감이 약동하는 힘의 예술의 대표다. 미를 발견하고 미를 표현하고 미를 창조하는 예술가의 직분과 사명은 참으로 놀랍고 위대하다. 우리는 예술가의 강렬한 정열을 가지고 인생을 뜨겁게 살아야 한다. 우리는 예술가의 풍부한 표현력을 가지고 인생을 아름답게 표현해야 한다. 우리는 예술가의 다채로운 창조력을 가지고 인생을 보람있게 조각해야 한다. 인생을 명작으로 만드는 비결이 무엇이냐, 나는 두 가지의 원리를 강조하고 싶다.

첫째는 개성의 원리다. 예술의 생명은 개성에 있다. 개성이 없는 예술은 예술이 아니다. ‘모방은 자살’이라고 에머슨은 갈파했다. 산다는 것은 나의 개성을 발휘하는 것이다. 존재의 의미는 개성에 있다. 산다는 것은 나의 빛, 나의 향기, 나의 소리, 나의 영혼, 나의 생명, 나의 덕, 나의 힘, 나의 존재를 최고도로 나타내는 것이다. 존재한다는 것은 표현하는 것이다. 최고의 자기 표현을 하는 사람이 가장 위대하다. 우리는 뜨겁게 진지하게 강하게 선명하게 아름답게 자기를 표현해야 한다.

둘째는 열심의 원리다. 우리는 인생을 열심히 살아야 한다. 열심히 사랑하고 열심히 노력해야 한다. 선이란 무엇이냐. 인생을 열심히 사는 것이다. 악이란 무엇이냐. 인생을 되는 대로 사는 것이다.

우리는 전력투구의 자세로 인생을 살아야 한다. 우리는 자기 일에 생명을 완전 연소시켜야 한다. 불석신명(不惜身命)하고 발분망식(發憤忘食)하여라. 우리는 자기 일에 신명을 아끼지 말고 몰입해야 한다. 침식을 잊고 분발해야 한다. 그러한 정신과 기백으로 인생을 사는 사람만이 승리와 영광의 기념비를 세울 수 있다.

네 인생을 예술처럼 아름답게 살아라.

네 생명을 정성껏 조각하여라.

네 생애를 위대한 작품으로 만들기 위하여 매일매일의 생활에 네 심혼을 기울여라.

그것이 빛나는 생을 창조하는 원동력이다.
