한국인의 상황 논리와 서양인의 상황 논리 Koreans’ logic and westerners’ logic to deal with a situation
I’ve often heard these words from Koreans, “Please understand my situation.” or “There’s nothing I can do because of the situation.” I think Koreans mention the situation quite a lot in conversation. Moreover, I can frequently hear “The situation in Korea…” on TV news. This quote is very familiar to Koreans, but westerners can perceive it in a different way. When it comes to the situation, they think they can control and have responsibility for it. So, when they hear, “I can’t do it in this situation.”, they understand their counterpart didn’t keep a promise.
Why are Koreans obsessed with a situation and mention it a lot? Richard E. Nisbett, a well-known professor in the U.S., explained, “One of the different ways of thinking between westerners and Asians (including Koreans) is how they look at the situations they are in. Westerners think that the personality of human beings maintains in any given situation and hardly changes after many years. However, Asians think situations always change, and human beings have to change to adapt to the situations.”
Like his remark, we have a proverb in Korea, “Rivers and mountains changes in 10 years.” It means that people can change as time goes by. As we commonly see in many Hollywood movies, westerners have a strong tendency to fight against the evil without any hesitation and finally win a victory. From my perspective as a westerner, it seems like more focus is put on human beings. The western philosophy and tradition that emphasize humans more than situations are originated from Ancient Greece and are established in detail during the Italian Renaissance. It means that human beings can control everything by their will and behaviors, and everything has to exist for the human beings. Also, science was developed based on this way of thinking.
The Koreans’ obsession of the situation can be found in the background of history. Korea was located between powers and was invaded a lot, so seeing through the situations and dealing with it was the best way to be able to survive. For this reason, Koreans positively evaluate people who move through the situations rather than criticize them. Koreans tend to give a good grade to people who understand the situations well and go with the flow of changes because Koreans think they have a great sense of flexibility. On the other hand, people who don’t flexibly deal with the situations are regarded as the extreme stubborn.
A professor from Germany, who was my teacher, gave an example of driving style of Koreans, relating to this topic. He said that while driving on the road, Germans hardly change the lane, whereas Koreans change the lane whenever they found the space in the next lane. It means that Koreans immediately deal with the traffic situation. When westerners who are living in Korea see Koreans’ driving habit at first, they find it difficult to understand it. Conversely, it can be interpreted that the rapid economic development of Korea can be possible due to this Koreans’ tendency because taking prompt action in the fast-paced situations was necessary for both survival and development. From a different point of view, it accords with westerners’ thought of controlling the situation and using it. However, if people are excessively obsessed with the situational logic, they will seek for their benefits without generosity of others. Major accidents and incidents that happened in Korea reflect this social climate. It is important to quickly adapt to the situation, but I hope the social atmosphere that is generous to others will be settled down.

한국인들과 어울리면서 자주 듣는 말이 있다. “지금 내 상황이 이러니 이해해 달라”, “지금 처한 상황 때문에 어쩔 수 없다” 등이다. 이처럼 한국인들은 대화에서 자신의 상황에 대한 설명이 유독 많은 것 같다. 심지어 TV 뉴스에서도 “우리나라의 현재 상황은…”이라는 말이 자주 나온다. 한국인에게는 매우 익숙한 말이지만 서양인들은 이를 좀 다르게 받아들일 수 있다. 서양인들은 기본적으로 인간이 상황을 지배하고 있으며 그 상황에 대해 책임을 져야 한다고 생각한다. 이 때문에 “지금 상황에서는 어렵다”는 말을 들을 경우 상대방이 약속을 제대로 지키지 못했다고 받아들인다.
한국인들은 왜 상황에 대해 집착하고 이를 자주 거론할까. 미국의 저명한 리처드 니스벳 미시간대 교수는 이렇게 설명한다. “서양인과 동양인(한국인 포함)들이 갖고 있는 사고방식의 차이 중 하나가 상황에 대한 인식이다. 서양인들은 인간이 가진 특성이 어느 상황에서나 유지되며 오랜 세월이 지나도 바뀔 가능성이 작다고 생각한다. 하지만 동양인들의 경우 외부 상황은 항상 변하고 있으며 인간은 이에 적응해 움직여야 한다고 생각한다.”
그의 말처럼 한국에는 ‘10년이면 강산도 변한다’는 속담이 있다. 이는 세월이 흐르면 인간도 변할 수 있다는 것을 의미한다. 반면 서양인은 할리우드 영화에서 흔히 보듯 흔들림 없이 악(惡)과 맞서 싸워 결국 승리를 쟁취하려는 성향이 강하다. 서양인인 내 관점에선 좀 더 인간에게 초점을 맞춘 것으로 보인다. 상황보다 인간을 강조하는 서구의 철학과 전통은 고대 그리스에서 시작해 이탈리아 르네상스 시대에 구체적으로 확립됐다. 이는 이 세상의 모든 것이 인간의 의지와 행동에 의해 지배되며 인간을 위해 존재해야 한다는 것이다. 과학도 이런 사고를 기반으로 발전했다.
한국인의 상황에 대한 집착을 돌이켜 보면 그 역사적 배경에서도 찾을 수 있다. 한국은 역사적으로 강대국 사이에 끼여 침략을 많이 받았다. 생존을 위해서는 상황을 제대로 파악하고 대처하는 것이 최선이었다. 이 때문에 한국에선 상황에 따라 움직이는 것에 대해 비판보다는 긍정적인 평가가 더 많다. 상황을 잘 파악하고 그 변화의 흐름을 잘 타는 사람에게 ‘뛰어난 유연성을 갖고 있다’며 후한 점수를 주곤 한다. 반면 상황에 유연하게 대처하지 못하면 고집불통이라는 오해를 받기도 한다.
이와 관련해 옛 은사였던 독일 출신의 한 교수는 한국인들의 운전 스타일을 예로 든 적이 있다. 그에 따르면 독일인들은 도로에서 운전을 할 때 필요하지 않으면 차선을 바꾸지 않는다. 반면 한국인들은 옆 차선에 틈이 생기면 차선을 바꿔 그 공간을 차지한다. 한국인들은 도로 상황에 따라 즉각 대처한다는 것이다. 한국에 살고 있는 서양인들은 이런 한국인의 운전 습관을 처음 접할 때 굉장히 의아하게 생각할 것이다. 하지만 한국의 급속한 경제발전도 이런 성향에서 가능해진 것이라고 볼 수도 있다. 생존과 발전을 위해서는 급변하는 상황에 재빨리 대처하는 것이 필요했기 때문이다. 이 또한 달리 보면 상황을 지배하고 활용하겠다는 서양인의 사고와 일맥상통하는 측면도 있다. 그러나 지나치게 상황 논리만을 앞세울 경우 타인에 대한 배려 없이 자신의 이익만을 추구하게 된다. 한국에서 발생하는 대형 사건·사고들도 이런 사회적 분위기가 반영된 것이다. 상황에 맞는 신속한 적응도 중요하지만 주변에 대한 배려 또한 잊지 않는 사회 분위기가 정착되길 희망해 본다.
